Americans for Legal Immigration PAC is withdrawing support for Lou Dobbs after years, including the suspension of websites calling on Dobbs to run for President due to the perceived change in Mr. Dobbs’s stances on immigration issues.
“While Mr. Dobbs claims his positions have not changed, however, that is not the perception of many of our mutual supporters,” said William Gheen of ALIPAC. “His recent comments on Telemundo and his national radio show supporting some kind of path to citizenship for illegal immigrants is inconsistent with positions of ALIPAC and the views of most American citizens.”
A recent Pulse Opinion Research, LLC, September, 2009 poll found 78% of likely voters were opposed to legalizing the status of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. with only 19% supporting it. Eighty-eight percent of African-Americans were opposed to legalization. These findings are consistent with numerous other certified polls presented in ALIPAC’s “Polls and Surveys” section at alipac.us
Dobbs created shock waves last week when news broke about his pro-Amnesty comments on Telemundo that appear to be a departure from his prior support for existing immigration laws. ALIPAC circulated the video of the entire Lou Dobbs interview on Telemundo to over 30,000 national supporters.
“Our internal polling shows that over 70% of our supporters are upset with Mr. Dobbs’s comments on Telemundo is support of legalizing illegal aliens. ALIPAC opposes any path to citizenship form of Amnesty for illegal aliens currently in the US,” said Gheen. “Therefore we are dropping our support for Lou Dobbs and suspending the fan sites we have created.”
ALIPAC was the first national organization to call on Dobbs to consider a run for President of the United States. Gheen discussed these issues with Dobbs on his national radio show on Monday, Nov. 30.
ALIPAC is suspending the operations of two Dobbs fan websites. The Facebook “Draft Lou Dobbs for President or US Senate” and the fan site www.LouDobbsForPresident.org will suspend operations and have a notice of ALIPAC’s discontinued support placed upon them. The site www.LouDobbsForPresident.org was launched back in early 2008 and has generated pledges of over $660,000 in contributions if Lou Dobbs were to run for office.
“We’ve received so many demands from prior Dobbs supporters to remove their pledges of support that we have to suspend all operations on the Dobbs fan sites,” said Gheen. “Lou Dobbs has deeply offended his base of supporters and ALIPAC is going to remain loyal to those Americans who support our existing immigration laws instead of Amnesty disguised as reform.”

Two months ago, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) spoke truth to power when he yelled “You Lie!” as President Obama asserted “There are also those who claim that our reform efforts would insure illegal immigrants. This, too, is false. The reforms I’m proposing would not apply to those who are here illegally.
Wilson was right. Obama was indeed lying.
Under legislation which the House may vote on as early as Saturday (November 6), illegal aliens were allowed to participate in the government subsidized health “exchange”. The Democrats intentionally blocked amendments to require any verification to ensure that illegal aliens do not receive the public option.
After Wilson exposed Obama and the Democrats’ lies, the White House backtracked. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that Obama would promote a bill where “illegal immigrants would not be allowed to access the exchange that is set up.” He also said that adding verification requirements is “something we’d work out with Congress.” [White House stiffens against coverage for illegal immigrants, Associated Press, September 11, 2009]
Obama can “work” all he wants, but the Democrats in Congress have apparently chosen simply to ignore his guidelines. In the 1900 pages of the health care bill, they couldn’t (=wouldn’t) add the few sentences that would keep illegal aliens from exploiting taxpayer services.
Joe Wilson along with Representatives Dean Heller (R-NV) and Nathan Deal (R-GA) are planning to introduce an amendment to the Rules committee to close this loophole. But the Democrats are planning to block it.

In last month’s issue of The People News, it was mentioned that many feel Cleveland, TN has become a sanctuary city where illegal immigrants can commit crimes without fear of prosecution. At a recent Bradley County Commission meeting, Jerry Chess, a subcontractor in the county was another concerned citizen who took to the podium to voice his concerns.
He said that the illegal immigration problem seems to be getting out of hand, but it wasn’t so much the illegal immigrants that are creating the problem, his problem is with the builders and the homeowners trying to get the bottom dollar by hiring illegal aliens. He estimates that he has lost approximately 65 percent of his business just this year because of illegal immigration. Mr. Chess asked the commission what can be done to find a resolution to this problem.
Masonry contractor, Troy Smith also addressed commissioners saying that he had called the Bradley County Sheriff’s Department trying to get some information about what could be done. They informed him that they had never bee asked that question.
Commissioner Howard Thompson said the commission has talked to our legislators about this, however, he doesn’t think that they are moving fast enough in Nashville or Washington to take care of these problems. He said, “Locally I have no idea what we can do, but it needs to start on a state level.”
Commissioner Brian Smith informed Jerry Chess and Troy Smith that the city has a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent and that she has an office here in Cleveland. He said, ” I think the ICE agent can help answer a whole lot of questions about what can be done. Since she’s the federal agent, that’s who should be enforcing the law anyway.”
It took several attempts by this paper to contact local ICE agent Brenda Dixon. When we first called the Cleveland City Police Department, we were told she did not have a direct line. The city official with this information said they had only seen Agent Dixon one time and that she spends the majority of her time in Chattanooga. After numerous attempts, we finally contacted her at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs in Chattanooga. Agent Dixon said that she was not allowed to be contacted for press purposes and that she had points of contact that handle such questions. However, she said, those points of contact are not local and they would more than likely not be aware of problems that are going on in Cleveland and Bradley County.
Some local effort is being taken to deport illegal aliens with the recent news of the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office joining the Federal Criminal Alien Program (CAP) offered by ICE. The Criminal Alien Removal Act of 2008 directs the Secretary of Homeland Security to carry out a program to identify incarcerated criminal aliens, ensure that such aliens are not released back into the community and to remove such aliens from the United States upon release. The criminal alien program allows the correction staff at the Bradley County Jail’s booking office to check the immigration status of all new inmates.
Chief Deputy Bill Dyer said if the BCSO suspects that the person being booked is here illegally, their information will be sent to ICE. If ICE cannot verify that the person is legal, the BCSO will hold them until ICE picks them up and deports them. If they can be identified as illegal before they can make bond, they will still be held, even after they have paid their bond, until immigration and customs enforcement deports them. Under the law, federal authorities have 48 hours to pick them up and begin deportation proceedings. Since the beginning of this year, the BCSO has identified 37 incarcerated individuals as illegal aliens and turned them over to ICE for deportation.
In a recent press release Sheriff Tim Gobble said he is still interested in the federal 287g program which would allow his department an even greater ability to identify illegal aliens and deal with the illegal alien problem. According to Chief Deputy Bill Dyer, if the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office gets accepted into the 287g program it would allow them to deputize their people as federal immigration officers. “In other words, they would become custom enforcement agents.”
Just before going to press, new information was received by the The People News in regards to the 287g program. After getting what was described as the run around on this program from the federal government, Agent William Black, the 287g Program Coordinator with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in New Orleans, Louisiana contacted Chief Deputy Bill Dyer to see what he could do to help the BCSO get into the 287g program.
The BCSO’s requests to apply for the 287g program have been overlooked for over two years. After sending numerous requests to apply for the 287g program, Chief Deputy Dyer was was elated to receive some acknowledgement. He said, “I finally feel that they (ICE) are taking us seriously when it comes to our request for the BSCO to be part of this program.
Out of 95 counties in the state of Tennessee, only one, Davidson County, is certified to be part of the 287g program. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is also certified.”

The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office has joined the Federal Criminal Alien Program offered by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The Criminal Alien Removal Act of 2008 directs the Secretary of Homeland Security to carry out a program to:
Identify incarcerated criminal aliens.
Ensure that such aliens are not released into the community.
Remove such aliens from the United States upon release.
Sheriff Tim Gobble and Chief Deputy Bill Dyer met recently with representatives of ICE to finalize details of Bradley County’s participation. The act focuses on identifying criminal aliens who are incarcerated in Bradley County thereby helping to ensure that they are not released back into our community after they serve their sentence.
This program allows the correction staff in the Bradley County jail’s booking office to check the immigration status of all new inmates. As a normal part of the booking process correction officers will ask all inmates a number of questions such as where they were born and if they are a United States citizen. If the officer suspects the person being booked is here illegally or that their immigration status is questionable, an inquiry will begin to obtain more information about the individual. Those with questionable legal status have their names faxed to ICE for computer records checks and status verification.
If ICE cannot verify legal status, the individual is assumed to be here illegally and ICE will issue a federal detainer and forward it to the BCSO. This allows the BCSO to hold these individuals after their court proceedings are over and / or sentence is served.
Once the judicial process has concluded, the person will be held for federal authorities who have 48 hours to pick them up and begin deportation proceedings. This program also prevents those identified as illegal aliens from being released on bond once the detainer is received.
Sheriff Gobble said, “This is a step in the right direction, but the Federal government must get the illegal alien problem under control by securing the U.S. borders and quickly deporting all who come here illegally. The first test of citizenship is the ability to follow the law. If someone comes to this country illegally they have failed the first test of citizenship and should be deported until they can demonstrate adherence and respect for this country’s rule of law.”
“I am a great supporter of legal immigration and I am proud that the Statute Of Liberty still welcomes the world’s ‘tired, poor and huddled masses yearning to breathe free’ and holds her welcoming lamp ‘beside the golden door.’”
“However, I am strongly opposed to illegal immigration. It is important for all immigrants desiring citizenship to come here legally, it is also imperative that the federal government reduce the immigration bureaucracy and streamline a legal immigration process that promotes lawful entry into this country instead of discouraging it.”
Chief Deputy Dyer pointed out over the last several years there has been a noticeable increase in criminal offenders being brought to the jail who are unable to provide the arresting officer and the booking officer with either a driver’s license, social security card or any authenticated immigration papers.
Sheriff Gobble has worked diligently for months seeking viable solutions for the increasing local illegal alien problem.
“Getting this illegal alien problem under control will promote public safety and National Security for all citizens.”
